Zambo Archdiocese All Set to Celebrate Its Centennial With Events on April 9-12
A SERIES of activities highlighted by a pontifical mass to be attended by Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Most Rev. Joseph Edward Adam, Cardinals Rosales and Vidal, and more than 40 Archbishops and Bishops from all over the country on April 12 to mark the 100th year anniversary of Zamboanga City as the first Diocese in the whole of Mindanao.
The religious service will be held at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at 9 AM, the Zamboanga Archdiocese spokesman Msgr. David Alonzo said.
The actual anniversary date is April 10, the day a hundred years ago when Pope Pius X issued a papal bull that decreed Zamboanga, along with 3 other Dioceses celebrating centennial at the same time, namely: Tuguegarao, Lipa, and Calbayog, Msgr. David said.
Pope Pius XII elevated the diocese of Zamboanga into an Archdiocese on May 19, 1958 with Ipil, Basilan, and Jolo as its suffragan Dioceses.
Today, the archdiocese boasts of 23 parishes and 3 quasi-parishes covering most of its 98 barangays, served by about 50 diocesan priests and other men and women religious orders who run parishes, schools, social action centers, housing settlements, medical apostolate, livelihood projects, a seminary and many charitable institutions.
The triduum or 3-day celebration will kick off on April 9 with the holding of the Señora and Señor de Centenario pageant contest at the Centro Pastoral complex, with contestants coming from all of the parishes. On the same day, an Agro-Fair sponsored by the BEC will open in the same place, a Torch Parade from Cathedral to Centro Pastoral, a fonda will open at the same complex to be participated in by all parishes and religious organizations, Msgr. David said.
Another event during the triduum will be a motorcade on April 10 and a street dancing competition on April 11.
On the midnight of April 11, countdown activities will usher in the celebration of the 100 hundred years with fireworks and the symbolic ringing of church bells 100 times.
The centennial theme is Remembering the Past with Gratitude, Living the Present in Communion, Facing the Future with Renewed Spirit.
