April 9 - 12 Festivities Will Commemorate Archdiocese's Centennial
CATHOLICS in Zamboanga City will celebrate the centenary of the founding of their diocese - the first in Mindanao on April 9 to 12 with a series of activities to be participated in by the now archdioceses 23 parishes and 3 quasi-parishes.
The actual anniversary date is April 10, the day a hundred years ago when Pope Pius X issued a papal bull that decreed Zamboanga, along with three other dioceses celebrating centennial at the same time, namely: Tuguegarao, Lipa, and Calbayog. In 1958, another papal bull from Pope Pius XII elevated Zamboanga Diocese into an Archdiocese.
Archdiocesan spokesman, Msgr. David Alonzo said the celebration will start on April 9 with Archbishop Romulo Valles, DD, opening the BEC Agro Fair at 8:30AM at the Centro Pastoral grounds. The fair will last for three days. Its opening will immediately be followed by the canvassing and counting of the contest for Señor y Señora de Centenario at the Metropolitan Cathedrals Conference Hall. Each parish is expected to field a pair of candidates.
A Holy Mass at 5:30 PM in the Metropolitan Cathedral will precede a torch parade on April 9 also to be participated in by all parishes and Catholic religious organizations, schools and communities. The parade will kick off at 6:30 PM from the cathedral, weave around the city, and end at the Centro Pastoral along Gov. Camins Avenue.
After the torch parade, a program will follow during which the Archbishop will formally open the Fonda de Centenario. Parishes will contribute entertainment and cultural numbers in the three night-long fonda.
A motorcade at 2 PM will usher in the second day of the triduum festivity. Led by the Archbishop and also to be participated in by the parishes with their respective floats, it will start from Centro Pastoral, go around the city, and return to the complex. Then at 6 PM, the coronation pageant for the Señor y Señora de Centenario will unfold at the Centro Pastoral.
On the visperas day, April 11, an afternoon-long street dance contest and parade will weave from the Metropolitan Cathedral to Centro Pastoral. The fonda will continue on its last night.
From 11:30 PM, a countdown will welcome the main centenary day celebration with the ringing of church bells in all parishes at midnight. A fireworks show will also be held at the Centro Pastoral.
A solemn pontifical mass will highlight the centennial day on April 12, to be held at the Metropolitan Cathedral at 9 AM. The mass will be attended by Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Most Rev. Joseph Edward Adam, Cardinals Rosales and Vidal, and more than 40 Archbishops and Bishops from all over the country.
