Ateneo de Zamboanga University to Host Lecture Series and Photo Exhibit on the History of the Catholic Church in Zamboanga
The Ateneo de Zamboanga University will hold a lecture series and a photo exhibit dubbed as La Parroquia: A History of the Catholic Church in Zamboanga, 1635 - Present. Three lecture dates are set for this year: September 18 (Pre-Diocesan Period), October 8 (Diocesan Period) and November 17 (Archdiocesan Period). All three lectures will be held at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall, LRC, AdZU, La Purisima Campus from 2:00 to 4:30 PM.
Immediately following the third lecture is the launching of the Photo Exhibit at 5:00 PM at The Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago, AdZU, La Purisima Campus. In the same exhibit, two featured lectures will be given on December 3, 2008, from 2:00 to 4:30 PM: "Marian Devotion in Zamboanga" and "Church Registers as Sources of History." The exhibit will run from November 17 to December 17, 2008 and is open to the public.
La Parroquia is organized in coordination with the Archdiocese of Zamboanga, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary as an Archdiocese this year and its 100th Anniversary as a Diocese in 2010. With the theme: "Acordando antes con gratitude, Viviendo el presente en comunion, y Enfrentando el futuro con Nuevo espiritu," a number of activities have been organized by the Archdiocese of Zamboanga, one of which is research on its history chaired by Fr. Antonio F. Moreno, SJ, AdZU President. La Parroquia: A History of the Catholic Church in Zamboanga, 1635 - Present is organized to gather the Catholic faithful in a moment of remembrance with gratitude for the past, and together renew the missionary spirit.
Together with Fr. Moreno in this project are the following: Dr. Aireen Barrios and Ma. Christina Cañones both from the School of Liberal Arts; Dr. Robert Panaguiton of the Institute of Cultural Studies for Western Mindanao, AdZU; Antonio Enriquez of the Creative Writing Center, AdZU; and Dr. Hermenegildo Malcampo, a local historian. They also serve as resource persons for the lecture series.
